SAFER NAIL POLISH

For many environmentally conscious women buying regular (and unfortunately quite toxic) nail polish is becoming quite a headache. Fortunately, there are more and more alternatives popping up on the market these days that are safer not only for you and your health but the planet as well.

Some of the examples include soy- and corn-based polish (e.g. Priti) and water-based ones by Suncoat, which not only is available in 32 colors but also hydrates the nails. Another new trend that is safer and fun with many bright colors from ToeShades is the easiest to remove since it simply peels off, taking away the need to use harsh polish removers.

Many conventional nail polishes contain quite a number of toxic solvents, such as toluene (known to cause asthma), amyl, butyl and ethyl acetate, which are considered neurotoxins. Moreover, many of the coloring agents used in cosmetics (nail polish among them) have been linked to cancers, especially the coal-tar dyes found in FD&C Blue 1 and FD&C Green 3.

Conventional nail polish (among a number of various conventional cosmetics) contain formaldehyde (a known human carcinogen) and phthalates, which disrupt hormones in humans when they enter the blood stream. And nails are porous surfaces that allow for many substances to seep through. So why not try the new and safer nail polish? Especially since not only it will not endanger your health but will provide as much (if not more) fun than the conventional ones?

I live in the bay area, and I found some safe nail polish at a store called Embodies in Larkspur. It’s called soulstice and it’s free of toxins, vegan, and cruelty free! just in case your readers wanted to know :)
